Hike Meet the Goats in Langhuso & Cheese Tasting

Starting at Melhus summer farm, our guided Hike to Meet the Goats in Langhuso offers a peaceful, family‑friendly experience from May to September. Walk beside rivers and through woodland, learn about traditional seter life, and finish at Langhuso to meet the herd and taste our award‑winning goat cheeses.

Meet your local guide at Melhus, where the goats arrive on May 17th each season. From here we set off on an easy uphill trail toward Langhuso, our second summer farm. Along the way you’ll walk along the valley river, pausing frequently for spectacular views over the Aurlandsfjord and surrounding peaks.

As you walk, your guide will share the stories of the budeier (the traditional dairy maids) who lived and worked on these summer farms long before roads and electricity. Learn how seasonal life was organised, how the goats were herded up the mountain each summer, and why these seters remain so close to local culture and cheese production.

When we arrive at Langhuso (goats move here around July 15th and remain until autumn), you’ll meet the goats grazing around waiting to go in for milking. Then sit down for a guided tasting of our handcrafted goat cheeses—learn about the traditional methods, the ageing process, and what gives our cheeses their distinctive flavour. Tastings are held outdoors among the goats when weather permits, or inside the cosy seter in poor weather.

This easy hike is suitable for most fitness levels and perfect for families, food lovers, and anyone seeking an authentic local experience.
